AUSSIE COALITION TO STRIKE NEW DEALS WITH LANKA AND INDONESIA ON BOATS
2012-12-12
Opposition Immigration spokesman Scott Morrison has vowed to dramatically ramp up regional deterrence measures by striking new bargains with Sri Lanka and Indonesia following Labor’s failure to stop the boats by reintroducing offshore processing.
Mr Morrison also said today that he was unconvinced the permanent facility planned for Nauru would suffice over the long term, particularly once refugee assessments had been conducted.
Acknowledging the problem of boat arrivals was far wo

Pathways Of Dissent: Tamil Nationalism In Sri Lanka
2012-12-12
Many scholarly studies on Sri Lanka explain the nature and the roots of the ethnic conflict between the Tamils and the Sinhalese, which eventually opened the way for the birth of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (the separatist Tamil organization, commonly known as the LTTE, established in May 1976 and violently defeated in May 2009). However, very few studies on Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflicts focus on the Tamil perspectives and the complexities of their struggle or the dynamic evolution from the non-violent stage (1947-1976)

Corruption is also a human rights violation
2012-12-11
It is certainly not a co-incidence that the International Human Rights Day (10 December) comes on the heels of the International Anti-Corruption Day (9 December). The two issues are inextricably linked, and in the Sri Lankan context, it couldn’t have been more apt, given the rampant corruption currently pervading the country and increased efforts to subjugate the rights of people.
When corruption is taken as a norm and not the exception, the infusion of corrupt practices into daily li

To ignore and suffer Champika’s madness?
2012-12-11
Minister of Power and Energy, Champika Ranawaka, has authored an op-ed piece (The Nation, November 25) that is quite mad. Titled “Blatant attempt to justify ethnic cleansing in North,” it made me naturally think, given his extremist politics, that he wanted to rid the North of us Tamils – but no, he was alleging the North being cleansed of Sinhalese.
In arguing that Jaffna has been ethnically cleansed, he queries why Jaffna is still deprived of Sinhalese bakery food although, he avers, a sales outlet for J
