Revisiting The Horror In Sri Lanka
2013-03-01
In the series of photographs shot in 2009, the bare-chested boy is first shown seated on a bench watching something outside the frame. Then he is seen having a snack. In the third image he is lying on the ground with bullet holes in his chest. The photographs, which were released last week by the British broadcaster Channel 4, appear to document the final moments in the life of 12-year-old Balachandran Prabhakaran, the youngest son of the slain founder of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Velupillai Prabhakaran.

A federal Liberal backbencher has accused his own party of vilifying asylum seekers.

Victorian MP Russell Broadbent made the comments after a colleague, Immigration spokesman Scott Morrison, called for behaviour protocols for those released into the community.

Mr Morrison says police should be notified of where asylum-seekers are living in the community, and there should be strict guidelines for the behaviour of those on bridging visas

Political agendas fuelling ethnic clashes
2013-03-01
With the defeat of the LTTE, the government has lost the scapegoat it needs to win another election. It has therefore made the Muslim community of Sri Lanka as the next scapegoat. This strategy would allow the government to recoup its fragile Sinhalese-Buddhist vote base, the United National Party (UNP) alleged yesterday.

Addressing the media in Colombo, UNP Western Provincial Council member, Mujibur Rahman said, "It is increasingly obvious that political agendas are fuelling ethnic clashes between the Sinhalese a

The passage back to India beckons Welikada prisoners
2013-03-01
“Saare, Nasiraannu.” (Sir, this is Nasir). I first heard the voice announcing him over the phone a fortnight after I moved to Colombo as The Hindu’s Correspondent in December 2010. Over the next two years and two months, I would hear this voice often, sometimes in excited whispers, and, at other times, in anxious half-sentence wails.

Nasir was one of the 31 Indian nationals serving a term in Colombo’s Welikada prison. Almost everyone in the group had similar stories — lured by the chance to make

The high court in London blocks the deportation of a group of failed Tamil asylum seekers who were due to be sent back to Sri Lanka on Thursday despite torture concerns.

The high court decision was described as "unprecedented and precedent-setting" by a legal source.

The group of failed Tamil asylum seekers was due to be sent back to Sri Lanka on Thursday, on a flight leaving the UK at around 4pm, but now they will be able to remain in the UK while their situations are considered further.

2013-03-01
THe Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) yesterday strongly recommended that the government desists from accepting responsibility to certify products as halal, as was suggested by the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU).

Addressing the media in Colombo, BBS General Secretary Galaboda Aththe Gnanasara Thero said, "The ACJU has very cunningly tried to pass the halal certification off on the government. They mustn't accept this suggestion. The ACJU must step back, not just a few feet but several kilometres."
