A spike in the number of illegal migrants caught up in human smuggling operations, stranded in West Africa and in need of assistance prompted the federal government to double funding for a project that returns those willing to give up their fight for asylum to their country of origin free of charge.

Documents obtained through access to information show Foreign Affairs approved a $4-million funding boost in July 2012 to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) which manages the program, bringing Canada’s contrib

BBS fires all cylinders
2013-03-14
Firing from all cylinders, the Bodu Bala Sena yesterday hit back against Monday’s much-welcomed and harmonious compromise on the Halal controversy and its architects, with the monk-led group claiming it would not rest until the Islamic certification is completely banned.

The hard-line group which started the anti-Halal agitation through the country said the logo was merely the final stamp of a process that was abhorrent to the Sinhalese Buddhist majority in the island. The group said the Halal debate must continue and Si

Arsenic as the cause of CKDu
2013-03-14
Arsenic issue, as usual, has taken a political direction. It cannot be helped as there is lot of politics around arsenic. Politics in western Christian colonialism is bound with culture and the fight is not only against those who are responsible for the Chronic Kidney Disease unidentified etiology (CKDu) directly but against the cultural colonialists as well. The UNP, JVP and some three wheeler parties attempt to gain political mileage by accusing the government of not supplying the dialyzing machines and other equipment to the governmen

All parties barring VCK keep away
2013-03-14
The general strike called by the Tamil Eelam Supporters’ Organisation (TESO) for the Sri Lankan Tamil cause on Tuesday brought out fundamental differences that have prevented political parties in the State from coming together on a single platform.

Barring the DMK and its ally Viduthalai Chiruthikal Katchi, even political parties such as the MDMK, PMK and other outfits that share the idea of “a separate Eelam” refused to participate in the strike.

DMK’s rivals argue that the party had no locu

And the cold war goes on
2013-03-14

Pressure for a war crimes investigation continues to mount. With the sessions of the UN Human Rights Council entering their second week, activists descended on key national capitals, urging governments to pass a resolution that calls for international action.

As usual, India has been the site of the most extreme interventions. As Karunanidhi’s DMK held a meeting of the Tamil Eelam Supporters’ Organisation in Delhi and called for a general strike in Tamil Nadu, a member of Seeman’s NTK self-immolated and

Ghosts of Tamil Civilians Killed in War Haunting Sri Lankan Nation on the Whole
2013-03-14
Coupled with media reports that there may be a ‘consensus resolution’ on Sri Lanka at the UNHRC this time round, President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s reiteration of a September deadline for Provincial Council polls in the Northern Province, may be a silver-lining on the otherwise cloudy and confused ethnic front.

Together, they could mean that the clock could still be set back on the ‘political solution’ to the ethnic issue to the days prior to the stakeholders nearer home going on to the ‘UNHRC mo
