The Left As Political Actor
2013-03-02
Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Virginia (founded by Thomas Jefferson), HL Seneviratne, writing in the Colombo Telegraph some weeks ago, raised the question ‘Is There a Role for the Left?’ and answered in the affirmative. I agree, though I suspect he is addressing a different tradition and generation of the Left than I am.

In order to make any headway whatsoever, all streams of the Lankan Left cannot avoid and must adopt a correct stance (note that I do not say the correct stance) on the in

Former War Zones in Sri Lanka Left Struggling
2013-03-02
As Jaffna continues its steady return to normalcy, the rest of the North and parts of the East of the country are still struggling to get over the wounds of the 30-year war that ravaged it.

Past the teams of de-miners that litter the side of the A9 road, beyond Kilinochchi towards Mullaitivu, the real remains of what was a war zone are clearly seen. Kilinochchi, having suffered heavy damages during the final stages of the war, serves as the last reminder of development with newly built banks and shops lining the road.

Plight of Young Mr.Waidyalankara is Symbolic of our Collective Fate in a Country Bereft of Justice and Law
2013-03-02

It was indeed saddening to hear of the savage beating of Mr. Asela Waidyalankara by a group of goons led by a Ministerial Son. While incidents of violence between young people are not unusual, the level of impunity enjoyed by a privileged few and the blatant double standards applied by those supposed to uphold the rule of law in such instances are no doubt unique to the ‘Miracle of Asia.’

This is not the first time Ministerial offspring have acted with such highhandedness nor will it unfortunately be

TNA Calls Upon Sri Lankan Govt to Cooperate with any UNHRC Resolution Seeking Implementation of LLRC Recommendations and Ascertainment of Truth.
2013-03-02
It is said that Truth is the first casualty of war. I want to say today that Truth is also the first step in reconciliation. It is in recognition of this principle that after the struggle to end Apartheid in South Africa, the process that united the country was called the “Truth and Reconciliation Commission”.

In Sri Lanka too, many Truths about the war were hidden and continue to remain hidden. It is time for us in Sri Lanka to uncover the truth, face up to it, and move forward towards reconciliation. The end of

Allegations On War Crimes And How To Investigate Them?
2013-03-02

It is normal that those diehard ‘patriots’ who are not willing to be self-critical of one’s own country or government or even some sections of the armed forces would dismiss any allegations on war crimes or anything similar with various credible, partly credible and mostly incredible arguments. But there can be others who look at the issues and allegations from a longer term perspective and see the value of independent investigations to strengthen the already won over (relative) peace, democratization and reconci

Should International Schools come under State purview?
2013-03-02
‘International Schools’ have been galvanized into action following recent indications made by the government that it intends to incorporate international schools island-wide under the purview of the Ministry of Education.
The move is viewed by The International Schools of Sri Lanka (TISSL) as a hindrance to the very existence of international schools. “We find it unfair that our schools are branded and labeled,” said Dr Harsha Alles, Chairman of the association and head of Gateway College. “We feel that
