| 2013-01-01 |
November 27th this year marked an important milestone in the different phases of ethnic relations in this country. For those of us who still retain the memory of the events of 40 years ago, it was like Deja vu.
Students of the Jaffna University observed the Heroes’ Day within the University premises. The security forces invaded a female hostel, beat several students who protested the next day and the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) of the Sri Lanka Police arrested four University students.

This training programme – a Ministry of Higher Education prerogative – has been in force for two years now, drawing varied responses from different quarters. While some see this as a positive installment of “progressive values” in the would-be undergraduate, many other quarters including academics and educationists feel this as a governmental attempt at drilling

All Sri Lankans hailed you as the greatest leader that citizens had witnessed when you brought a certain era of our land to a close in May 2009. When I say a certain era, it was no doubt an era of unnecessary violence and great unhappiness, a great period of stress and uncertainty, which was brought upon the people of this country especially those in the North and East who bore the brunt of a long drawn civil war.

There are 192 flags flying at the UN and only the Sri Lankan flag has given a place to the Tamils.
Since Bruce Haigh (''Diplomats paint one-sided picture of Sri Lanka'', December 28, p15) has singled me out by name for defending my country - which is my duty as Sri Lanka's consul-general in Sydney - I would point out that he shouldn't have rushed into places where better informed commentators would fear to tread.

| WikiLeaks: Peace Process – Five Things That Upset Sinhalese Extremists |
| 2013-01-01 |
|
“Always a lively crowd, Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese extremists have been raising a ruckus over five issues of late. They have demanded, for example, that (#1) the Norwegian Ambassador be expelled from the country, and complained about (#2) a pro-Tamil movie that opened in Europe recently and (#3) a BBC poll that gave pride of place to a Tamil nationalist song. Constructing strawmen, they are also demanding that no effort be made to change (#4) the flag or (#5) the national anthem as part of the peace process. Although their anti-peace pro
