As February dawns, the focus is on the 65th Independence Day which will be celebrated with the usual pomp and pageantry on February 4 in the strategic Eastern Port City of Trincomalee. However the Anglican Church has called on its members to commemorate February 4 as a day of lamentation for the breakdown of the rule of law and the end of constitutional democracy in the aftermath of the illegal and unconstitutional impeachment of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake. Sri Lankan Mother Courage
2013-02-02
If anyone asked Kumbhakarna to name one contemporary Sri Lankan woman who qualifies to be called ‘great,’ he would unhesitatingly name the mother of Rizana Nafeek who was recently executed in Saudi Arabia for a crime she did not commit.

Why does this destitute, problem-ridden, utterly undistinguished woman from a very remote, backward part of the country deserve to be called that? Well, she had the incredible moral courage to turn down the compensation money of one million of rupees from a member of the Saudi

The Unknown Rizanas
2013-02-02
Sri Lanka expressed outrage at the tragic death of young Rizana Nafeek. Her story was highlighted as if it were uniquely unjust.
Yet the truth is that there are many Rizana Nafeeks out there – young men and women who go overseas in the hope of a better future, only to find themselves trapped in a nightmare and unable to return. These people get little publicity, but they languish in prisons and embassies, longing to return home.
An earlier article by The Sunday Leader found that young girls who were looking to go overseas

2013-02-02
The Sri Lankan government continued its assault on civil society and failed to take meaningful steps towards accountability for war crimes during the country's armed conflict that ended in 2009, Human Rights Watch said in its World Report 2013 released today.
In its 665-page report, Human Rights Watch assessed progress on human rights during the past year in more than 90 countries, including an analysis of the aftermath of the Arab Spring.

There was no fundamental progress on key human rights issues in Sri Lanka over

Canberra denies Sri Lanka people-smuggling report
2013-02-02
The Gillard government has flatly denied a news report that a senior Sri Lankan government official was suspected by Australian authorities to have been complicit in the people-smuggling trade.

The Australian reported Friday that intelligence agencies had identified a high-profile Sri Lankan official close to President Mahinda Rajapaksa who had authorised asylum-seeker boats leaving Sri Lanka bound for Australia.

But a spokesman for Foreign Minister Bob Carr said the claims were untrue.
