| 2013-03-11 |
|
The tabling of the US resolution on Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) last week and the increasing support received by the motion has compelled the Mahinda Rajapaksa government to consider getting the resolution to be a consensual motion.

| No List Of Consequences If Level Of Cooperation Reached – Bernard Savage |
| 2013-03-11 |
|
Head of Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka Bernard Savage says the EU has concerns over issues related to human rights and accountability in the country. He observed that there is still a lot to be done in terms of the country’s reconciliation process following the end of the war nearly four years ago. “I think as far as time and space is concerned, the international community recognises that it is necessary, but concrete action must be engaged,” Savage noted, adding that the whole ethos of the UNHRC is to wo

| Economic Sanctions and War Crimes Tribunals against SL |
| 2013-03-11 |
|
As the UNHRC sessions heats up, one of the questions in the minds of most members of the public is whether the UNHRC can initiate a war crimes probe against Sri Lanka. There are only two ways in which a war crimes trial can take place. One would be for the Security Council of the UN to institute a war crimes tribunal as had been done in the case of the special Tribunal on Yugoslavia (ICTY) or the Special tribunal on Rwanda (ICTR). The other way is for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to initiate proceedings against Sri Lanka.

| Sri Lankan Tamils won’t commit suicide for Prabhakaran’s cause - Shavendra |
| 2013-03-10 |
|
Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Maj. Gen. Shavendra Silva said yesterday that since the conclusion of the conflict in May 2009, not a single Sri Lankan Tamil had committed suicide in Sri Lanka or abroad calling for an international war crimes investigation targeting the government.
Regardless of unsubstantiated allegations against the government by politically motivated elements, those who had been saved from the clutches of LTTE were now enjoying peace and stability, Ambassador Silva said.

| You Managed To Do What No Govt Had Done Before – Blake To MR |
| 2013-03-10 |
|
“Ambassador noted that his time in Colombo had coincided almost exactly with the fourth and final phase of the Sri Lankan conflict, from mid-2006 until the war ended on May 18. The President’s government had managed to do what no government had done before: wrest all the territory of the country from the Tamil Tigers. Ambassador stressed that the reconciliation phase must begin now, with two vital components: the humanitarian side, providing the IDPs with what they need, and the political side – power-sharing arrangemen

| Rajapaksa Samagama And The Removal Of The Chief Justice |
| 2013-03-10 |
|
The removal from office of the Chief Justice of Sri Lanka was an unprecedented act in the judicial history of the country. I have been requested to examine the constitutionality of that act. In fact, that was the single issue on which the proceedings leading to the removal of the Chief Justice were questioned and challenged from the outset. Except in the government-owned media, there was hardly any reference to the alleged acts of misbehaviour. It was evident, from the beginning, that the objective of the exercise was to remove an
