The Anti-Corruption Unit of the Kandy Police nabbed a police constable, who is reportedly a member of MP Achala Jagoda's security contingent, for having two kilogrammes of cannabis in his possession.
The suspect, Sarath Kumara (43), is a father of two children, and resides in the Galthenna area in Kandy. Sources said he had been attached to the Ministerial Security Division of the Police for over 10 years. His older brother is also said to be an officer serving the same Division while his father is a retired police officer.
Police are of the view that the suspect had been engaged in transporting cannabis for the last 11 years while serving at the Bibile and Moneragala Police Stations.
Following information received by the Anti-Corruption Unit, officers of the Kandy Police had apprehended the suspect at Mulgampola, while he was riding his motorcycle, transporting one-and-half kilogrammes of cannabis.
On being interrogated, he had informed the police that another 500 grams of cannabis was hidden in a house in the Uduawela area in Galthenna.
Police sources said the suspect had been engaged in the illegal business over a long period of time, undetected, as he had been doing so in uniform. Investigations also revealed that big-time drug peddlers in Moneragala had maintained close connections with the suspect who had used his official position to sell illegal drugs.
OIC of the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Kandy Police, Pradeep Kottage, assisted by Sergeants Dissanayake, Vanderwall and Jayasundara, and PCs Sisira, Athula, Ruwan, Sanjeewa and Konara, arrested the suspect. They were instructed by Senior DIG of the Central Province, Gamini Peramuna, Kandy Division SSP, Gamini Ellepola and Chief Inspector of the Kandy Police, Palihawadana. |
