Any consumer using more than to pay up to Rs. 400 extra on his monthly bill, a senior power sector official said. "It could be one unit or more, but the subsidy is gone," he pointed out.

There was a jump of between Rs. 300 and 400 when a consumer uses more than 60 units, Lanka Electricity Company (Pvt) Limited (LECO) Acting General Manager, Senior Engineer, H. S. Somathilake said, admitting that there was an erroneous calculation immediately after the 60 unit jump.

Somathilake told The Island that when he inquired into an incident where a consumer had to pay more than the stipulated amount, the supervisor in the relevant branch had said the meter reading was done on the 29th day of the month, where the consumer had used 59 units.

"Going by an average of two units per day, he had consumed more than 60 units during the relevant month, thus the pricing structure differs," he added.

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) yesterday said for consumers using up to 60 units the bill would be calculated at Rs. 3. 30 units and Rs. 4.. But, when the units jumped over 60, there would be no concession and the consumer would have to pay Rs. 10 per unit plus fuel adjustment and fixed charges.

However, other block systems would remain as at the last bill though there was an increase in the unit prices.

A senior official of the PUCSL told The Island that consumers who had discrepancies in their monthly bill should first take the matter up with relevant branches of the CEB.
