The number of female workers going abroad for employment has decreased significantly last year compared to 2013, Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) says.

SLBFE Deputy Director and Media Spokesman Mangala Randeniya said that the number of female migrant workers had come down by 6.4 per cent compared to 2013. In 2013, 118,061 women had gone abroad seeking jobs, but in 2014 the number had decreased to 110,492––a reduction of 7,569 compared to the previous year.

Randeniya highlighted the fact that the number of women who attended the pre-house training programme conducted by the bureau for all housemaids before leaving the country too had dropped by 34 per cent last year.

He noted that women going abroad as house maids had also reduced by 34 per cent.

Randeniya explained that many social issues arose due to women migration and therefore the government had launched several programmes to discourage women from seeking overseas employment,

The bureau had already taken steps to raise awareness among women in rural areas about other ways of earning higher income within the country without seeking foreing jobs, he said.
