State Minister for Education V. Radhakrishnan said in Kandy that his ministry will provide a nutritious meal to all school children below Year six irrespective of their status.

The present system of providing a nutritious meal for underprivileged students will be done away with as the arrangement created a class difference among the poor and the privileged, the State Minister, when he called on the prelates of Malwatte and Asgiriya on Saturday.

The State Minister said that the move will cost the government Rs. 1.6 billion per month.

However, the program will begin with the approval of the Cabinet.

He said that 3,021 new teachers would be recruited according to an arrangement by the previous administration. This will help to fill teacher vacancies in the Northern province and in up-country Tamil medium schools.

Even in Jaffna there is a dearth of teachers as well as in the up-country, he noted.

The Mahanayake Theras conferred their blessings on the State Minister. Later, he attended a pooja at the Hindu Kovil in Kandy.

He was accompanied by his Central Provincial Council member R. Rajaram.
