Matale mass grave Lawyers doubt USA report

2015 Jan 19

By Niranjala Ariyawansha

Lawyers appearing for the victims of the Matale mass grave expressed doubts over the report submitted by the USA, on the bone samples sent.
Matale Magistrate Sampath Gamage ordered the CID to once again conduct a proper and thorough...
investigation into all reports being submitted, thus far, on the incident.
Attorneys-at-law Sunil Watagala and Gazali Hussain, who are appearing on behalf of the victims, pointed out that a government mechanism should get involved in determining whether the victims had died as a result of a crime.

The bone samples were sent to Beta Analytic in Miami, Florida, for Radio Carbon dating, to determine the time period to which the bones belong. Attorney Watagala said, the last page of the 33-page report does not even carry a letterhead.
"The last page carries the determination. The report has determined that these bones belong to those who died over 30 years ago. But Prof. Raj Somadeva, who carried-out the forensic examination, has mentioned in his report that these deaths had occurred between the 1980 and 1990 period," Watagala said.

Meanwhile, senior lawyer Hussain said, it is apparent that the report, allegedly sent by the USA, lacks transparency.
"These skeletal remains cannot be of those who committed suicide, and we can't even think that these are not of those who were killed. We are now suspecting whether the bone samples, that were sent to the USA for radio carbon testing, were originally found in the Matale grave as we were not present at the scene when the samples were collected," he added.
