Higher Education Minister S. B. Dissanayake received a warm welcome from the undergraduates the Eastern University had given a cordial welcome to the minister’s visit to their Trincomalee Campus on Sunday.

Students also agreed to stop their lecture boycott following discussions with the minister who undertook to do everything in his power to solve their problems fast.

The Eastern University Students have been boycotting classes since July 28 in protest against removal their popular Rector Dr. N. Varnakulenthiren and demanding the completion of the HOSTEL project.

Minister Dissanayake met the university administration, lecturers and undergraduates together during his visit and promised to provide solutions to student problems.

The minister’s media secretary S. R. Gayan Peiris told The Island that students were not happy with the removal of former rector Dr. Varnakulenthiren as he had rendered yeoman service to the campus.

Peiris said that the slow progress of the HOSTEL building projects had also created frustration among students and they had also held a protest opposite the Higher Education Ministry last month.

"When the minister agreed to visit the Trincomalee Campus and discuss the situation there, the students of the Eastern University agreed to receive him," Peiris said.

He said that after the discussion the minister promised students to complete the construction of the state-of-the-art hostel complex before December.
