HRCSL and COI to collaborate on probe

2014 Oct 08

Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka2The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) will meet members of the Presidential Commission of inquiry (COI) to investigate alleged abduction or disappearances of persons resident in the North and East tomorrow at the Head Office of Human Rights Commission.

The discussion will focus on how to enhance the mandate of HRCSL with the Disappearance Commission as part of reconciliation process, HRCSL said.

The COI was appointed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa lasy August as a part of the implementation of recommendations of the Commission on Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation (LLRC).

At the last sittings by the COI serious translation errors arose with the the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA) saying there were glaring mistakes in translating questions from English-speaking investigators to Tamil witnesses.

CPA had said the sittings had been affected by errors that could undermine the quality of testimony before the commission, adding that witnesses were also photographed by men said to be military intelligence officers.

The Missing Persons Commission however rejected the allegations raised over the translations.
