Lawyers slam CJ for accompanying MR

Lawyers' Collective yesterday (06) slammed the Chief Justice, Mohan Peiris, for compromising the independence of the judiciary by hobnobbing with politicians and being part of the recent State delegation to the Vatican.

The delegation, which was headed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, also included Monitoring MP of External Affairs and UPFA MP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena (who though yet to be formally charged, is alleged to have recently assaulted former Sri Lanka High Commissioner to the UK Dr. Chris Nonis at a recent function in New York,) and Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga to invite Pope Francis to Sri Lanka. Convener of the Lawyers' Collective Jayasuriya Chrishantha Weliamuna, said Peiris' participation was shocking and it was sad to see a judge becoming part of a State delegation, along with politicians.

"Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and therefore there is no problem in Peiris meeting the Pope on his own. This, however, is a State delegation and not a Judges' conference. Since former Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva's time, the integrity of independent Chief Justices has been lost," alleged Weliamuna.
