Man sets himself on fire against Pillay

2014 Sep 04

A man set himself on fire outside the Colpetty police station this morning in protest against the former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, the police media unit said.

The police said that the man was seated on the payment when he suddenly set himself on fire. Officers of the Colpetty police station rushed the man to hospital for treatment.

Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that when questioned by the police, the man had claimed he had initially attempted to set himself on fire near the US Embassy in Colombo.

However since police officers had prevented the man from getting close to the Embassy he had set himself on fire near the police station on the opposite side of the road in what was seen as a suicide attempt.

The man has been identified as a 72 year old former soldier.  The man said he was angry at the attempts being made against Sri Lanka.
