2014 Jul 16

Eurosceptic with the stamina to take PMÂ’s fight to BrusselsPhilip Hammond was today named as the new British Foreign Secretary replacing William Hague who, during his term, had been very vocal on the Sri Lankan issue.

Hammond was appointed by Prime Minister David Cameron in a Cabinet reshuffle which saw Hague being appointed as First Secretary of State, and Leader of the Commons.

Other new ministerial appointments were Michael Gove as Commons Chief Whip, Nicky Morgan as Education Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities, Liz Truss as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Michael Fallon as Defence Secretary, Esther McVey will be attending Cabinet in her existing role as Minister of State, Greg Clark was appointed as Minister for Universities and Science in addition to his current role as Minister of State, Stephen Crabb as Secretary of State for Wales and Baroness Stowell as Leader of the House of Lords and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Philip Hammond is regarded by the top of the Conservative party as an impressive operator, who has presided over steep budget cuts, preparations for an exit from Afghanistan and a large redundancy programme at the Ministry of Defence without attracting too many negative tabloid headlines.
