The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has recorded statements from seven young boys over an alleged child molestation incident involving a French national.

The NCPA has launched a manhunt in Hikkaduwa for the suspect who is alleged to have facilitated the French national to molest the children.

On a previous occasion, two suspects from Galle were arrested and placed in remand custody until July 7. The 52-year old French national is currently in the custody of the French Police.

The crime came to light after authorities in France discovered over 100 photographs in the possession of the main suspect, containing images of him with underage boys in an indecent manner. Officer in Charge (OIC) NCPA IP B.W. Bopitigoda told The Sunday Leader that the preliminary investigations have revealed that at least 50 children may have been subjected to sexual abuse.

The NCPA has thus far identified 11 children who were reported to have been molested by the key suspect. “Statements have been obtained from seven of the 11 boys in this regard,” he said. The French national was said to have committed the crime while visiting the country on several occasions from 2006 to 2012.

The NCPA said that an inquiry team is expected to visit France in order to obtain a statement from the key suspect and carry out further inquires.
