2014 Jun 04

Kuwait’s Deputy National Assembly Speaker MP Mubarak Al-Khurainij met with his Sri Lankan counterpart Chandima Weerakkody today as part of his official visit to Sri Lanka, the Kuwait news agency reported.

Al-Khurainij praised the two countries’ relations, noting that this visit aims to develop cooperation in all fields, and mainly in the parliamentary domain. The talks will also touch on regional and international issues of mutual concern, the MP added.

Moreover, Al-Khurainij recalled Sri Lanka’s stance in support of Kuwait during the Iraqi occupation of 1990, adding that the Sri Lankan community in Kuwait has a good reputation and respects the host-country’s laws.

Weerakkody on his part also noted “strong” relations are shared by the two countries, praising the role of Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) in supporting projects in Sri Lanka, especially in the electricity and power field.

Sri Lanka’s economy is growing, and the number of Kuwaiti tourists is increasing, he said, calling on Kuwaitis to engage in more investments in his country.

The Kuwaiti delegation includes MPs Saleh Ashour, Hamdan Al-Azmi, Majid Moussa, and Mohammad Al-Hadiya, and also includes representatives of the Assembly’s Secretariat.
