2014 May 23

Senior police officers who have past their retiring age are being retained in serviced to act according to the whims and fancies of politicians says the President of Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) Upul Jayasuriya.

Pointing out that the police wrongfully arrested a group of university students on an alleged court order and had assaulted them, the President of BASL said his Association would file contempt of court action against police officials, including senior DIG Anura Senanayake, over the arrests and assaults.

Mr. Jayasuriya said the police wrongfully arrested the group of university students on an alleged court order and had assaulted them taking cover under an order which was not there.

He said instead of taking instructions from the law books and the judiciary, the police are taking the dictates of politicians and senior police officers who have past their retirement age are being kept to do what the politicians want he added.

Seventeen students were arrested during and after the agitation carried out by students of Allied Science Courses in Universities opposite the University Grants Commission on the 16th against the reduction of the period of the course from four to three years, assaulted and were remanded. The police were so brutal towards students that the injured students were not provided with any medical assistance.
