Jaffna security beefed up on V-Day

2014 May 19

Security in Jaffan was beefed up by the army today as the country commemorated five years since the end of the war between the LTTE and the army.

The Jaffna media said that some roads, including the roads leading upto the Uthayan newspaper office and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) political office in Jaffna were closed by the army.

TNA MP E. Sarawanabawan, who is also the Managing Director of Uthayan, said that the army did not give any reason for closing the road where the Jaffna Uthayan newspaper office is located.

Meanwhile the Jaffna military claimed it closed the road as a precautionary measure following fears the Uthayan office may come under a mob attack.

Private commemorative events wee held at the Uthayan office as well as several other locations to remember the Tamil civilians killed during the final stages of the war.

The TNA staged events in the east as well to remember the Tamils killed during the war. The Government had placed a ban on public events being held to commemorate LTTE cadres killed during the battle.
