Cops among 7 remanded for murder

 copySeven suspects including a group of policemen from the Kandaketiya police were remanded by the Badulla Magistrate today over the death of an 18 year old youth after investigations revealed he may have been assaulted to death.

Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that a sub inspector, four policemen, a police assistant and a civil defence force member were remanded over the incident.

On Wednesday  the Kandaketiya police had arrested five suspects including the victim identified as Sandun Malinga over a crime and were placed in the police station cell.

However on Friday Sandun Malinga died while in police custody and the Magisterial inquiry was conducted on Friday while the post-mortem was conducted yesterday.

The post-mortem report was handed over to the Badulla Magistrate yesterday and it was found that the youth may have died from assault wounds following his arrest, SSP Ajith Rohana said.

As a result the seven suspects involved in the arrest of the youth were taken into custody and remanded after being produced before the Badulla Magistrate today.
