2014 May 12

India and Sri Lanka today had talks on maritime security and the fishermen issue, ahead of talks scheduled to take place between Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen associations tomorrow.

Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne and Indian External Affairs Ministry joint secretary and the official in charge of Sri Lankan affairs, Suchitra Durai, met in Colombo this evening and discussed a range of issues.

Fisheries Ministry spokesman Narendra Rajapaksa said that issues discussed between the Sri Lankan Minister and India’s External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid at an earlier meeting, were discussed at today’s meeting.

“Minister Senaratne and Suchitra Durai had discussed the need for a long term solution to the fishermen issue. The Minister focused his attention on holding Ministerial level talks between both countries soon on the fishing issue,” the spokesman said.

He said that Minister Senaratne had proposed that the Ministerial level talks take place as early as next month.

Meanwhile talks between Sri Lankan fishermen associations and Indian fishermen will take place in Colombo tomorrow.

Durai is scheduled to attend the meeting while Sri Lankan officials will also attend apart from the fishermen from both countries.
