HRCSL concludes probe on Rathupaswala crisis

2014 May 06

At the conclusion of the separate inquiry into the Rathupaswala crisis, the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has recommended that the Army act within the scope of its powers and responsibilities in situations such as protests, sources said.

The HRCSL has also suggested that the Police and the Army should maintain proper coordination.

The Rathupaswala residents held a massive protest rally on August 1 last year demanding that the Rubber Gloves Factory in the area be shut down because they claimed that the factory waste was polluting the water resources. The firing by security forces personnel in their attempt to quell the protest resulted in three residents being killed and more than 40 injured.

At a Human Rights Awareness Workshop held in Colombo, HRCSL Chief Prathibha Mahanamahewa said they has concluded two inquiries one on the pollution of drinking water at Rathupaswala and the other on the shooting at protesters.

Responding to a question by a participant, Dr. Mahanamahewa said a report with recommendations would be forwarded to the Army Commander on the shooting incident. He said the inquiry into the clash was carried out with statements recorded from villagers, security personnel and journalists.
