Announcement expected on probe

2014 May 06

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is expected to make an announcement later this month on the formation of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Sri Lanka, an OHCHR spokesman said.

The spokesperson said that work related to the composition of the commission is underway.

“These types of inquiry always take a while to set up, have their budget approved by the UN in New York etc. We will probably announce something later this month once everything is in place,” the spokesperson said.

The formation of the Commission of Inquiry on Sri Lanka is in line with a resolution on Sri Lanka adopted at the UN Human Rights Council in March.

During the March session of the UN Human Rights Council, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights had said it will need over USD 1,460,000 to implement the activities mentioned in the resolution.

The resolution, which was eventually rejected by the Government, called for an international investigation on Sri Lanka into some of the incidents alleged to have taken place during the war.
