Lankan fishermen arrested in India

2014 May 02

The Indian Coast Guard has taken five Sri Lankan fishermen into custody after intercepting them about 170 nautical miles off Paradip coast.

Although fishermen were captured on April 28, they were handed over to Paradip Marine Police Station only yesterday, The Hindu newspaper reported today.

According to J. V. Paul, Deputy Commandant (operation) of ICG, the Coast Guard personnel seized nearly 2.5 tonnes of fish preserved in ice container while there were 200 kg of fresh fish.

“The fishermen had possessed identity cards issued by Sri Lankan Government. No incriminating document was found in their possession,” he said.

Paradip Marine Police on Wednesday produced them in court. On April 4 last, the Indian Coast Guard had come across Sri Lankan fishermen and vessel off Paradip coast.

But the ICG had to leave them free after the Union Ministry of External Affairs gave green signal.
