Parents testify on Jaffna girl's death

2014 Apr 24

The parents of a girl found dead in a well in Jaffna testified in court today and raised suspicion over two Catholic priests alleging they were the cause of her death.

The mother of Jeron Consoleeta, in her testimony before the court in Jaffna, claimed she had heard her daughter speak to the priests on one occasion and claimed that both priests had said they were in love with her.

Consoleeta’s mother had said that when she questioned her daughter about the telephone conversation she had revealed that bothe priests had asked her to marry them while one priest had even threatened her.

She said that a day before her daughter was found dead she had gone out and had failed to return home even by the next morning.

A police complaint had been lodged over the missing daughter and that afternoon her body was found inside a well, Consoleeta’s mother told court today.

The father of the victim, meanwhile, said he suspected murder and pointed fingers at the two Catholic priests.

Last week the Jaffna Catholic Church had offered to assist investigations into the death of the girl in the area after the two Catholic priests had been linked to her death.

The Jaffna media quoted a statement from the Jaffna Bishop’s office as saying that the parents of the victim had not made any complaint to the Jaffna Bishop’s office regarding alleged harassment by the two priests before the girl was found dead in a well recently.
