2014 Apr 07

By Easwaran Rutnam

A delegation from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) will be heading to South Africa this week to have discussions with the special envoy on Sri Lanka of South African President Jacob Zuma.

The meeting comes as South Africans continue dialogue with Sri Lanka on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) process.

However, TNA MP M. A. Sumanthiran said the TNA delegation is not going to discuss the TRC process with South Africa. “We are going not for any TRC process but to meet the Special Envoy Cyril Ramaposa appointed by President Jacob Zuma,” Sumanthiran told The Sunday Leader. The TNA is to have talks with the South African special envoy ahead of his scheduled visit to Sri Lanka.

South Africa recently had talks with a government delegation after Sri Lanka showed interest in learning about the TRC process The South Africans had also abstained from voting in favour of the US sponsored resolution at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The South African government had told the UN Human Rights Council it supports a durable solution in Sri Lanka which can be reached by Sri Lankans themselves.
