Teachers Union condemns transfer of teachers

The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) yesterday condemned the transfer of five teachers from the Sir John Kotelawala Maha Vidyala, Kururnegala, claiming that the teachers were transferred due to giving statements at an inquiry into the suicide of a female student of the same school. CTU President Joseph Stalin said that all five teachers of Sir John Kotelawala Maha Vidyala were transferred to other schools on 17 March, for giving 'impartial' statements on the student's suicide case.
"One of the teachers' house was attacked on 21 March by unknown people since he had given impartial statements to the police regarding the suicide. The teacher has also lodged a complaint at the Kururnegala police following the attack," he said.
Stalin said the transfer had been carried out by the Kurunegala Zonal Educational Director, therefore CTU has sent a letter condemning the transfers.
"We know that even the Chief Minister of North Western Province has not acted impartially in this issue. We have written to the Provincial Education Director condemning the transfers and have requested to cancel them. If the authorities fail to take proper action, we will have to adopt serious trade union action,", he said.
