Hartal in Trinco, demo in Colombo

2014 Mar 21

A hartal was staged in Trincomalee today against the US sponsored resolution on Sri Lanka submitted in Geneva while a protest was also staged outside the US Embassy in Colombo by a group of people from Mannar.

The Trincomalee police said that shops in Trincomalee were shut as a mark of protest during the hartal while public transport was also at a virtual standstill.

The hartal in Trincomalee had been organised by Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim groups in the area and handbills had been distributed calling for support for the hartal, the police said.

The police also said they were investigating an attack on a few passenger buses in the area which had operated at the time of the hartal.

According to the Trincomalee police, security has been beefed up in the area to ensure no unruly incidents take place.

Meanwhile in Colombo, a group of people from Mannar staged a protest walk towards the US Embassy in Colombo and handed over a petition to the Embassy against the US resolution.

Heavy traffic was seen in the area during the protest walk this morning which ended peacefully.
