When accusations of human right are brought in Geneva government breaks heads of artistes “ Bimal

2014 Mar 18

“While government goons carry on attacks against the ordinary people the main topic in the country has become human rights debated in Geneva. Their main accusation against the government is there is no justice or fair play in our country. The police and courts do not act impartially. While such accusations are brought in Geneva the government is breaking the heads of artistes,” said the Member of the Political Bureau of the JVP and National Organizer of its Socialist Youth Union.

He said this speaking at a special press conference held at the JVP head office today (14th) regarding the thug attack at Panadura on street drama performers of the Society for Socialist Art of the Socialist Youth Union of the JVP.

Mr. Bimal Ratnayaka addressing the media said, “Government goons carried out a savage attack on the street drama performed by the Society for Socialist Art of the Socialist Youth Union of the JVP. Serious issues have come up regarding the manner the police is acting regarding the incident. From the outset there was tremendous response from the public for the street drama of the Socialist Youth Union.

Rajapaksa regime is losing its public support. The street drama troupe performed to apprise the public regarding smuggling in of heroin and ethanol to the country, the fate of education in the country and anti – peoples moves of the government. Yesterday, a street drama was performed near the private bus stand at Panadura. Normally, street dramas are performed at crowded places but in a manner that would not obstruct the public. The street drama at Panadura too followed this process.

After the performance was over government henchmen employed at the bus stand attacked the performers. The manner the police acted since then is deplorable. They act in a very partial manner. They carry out their duties as if they are in the pockets of UPFA politicians. We cannot expect any justice from them. For, several street drama performers have been remanded.

The President as well as government ministers and MPs blatantly violate law of the country. The President makes use of all media institution to have ‘jana hamu’ (meeting the public) during the election period. The legally established election offices of the JVP are attacked deploying thugs.  Yesterday two election offices of the JVP in Hambantota area were attacked and demolished. Our offices in Colombo, Avissawella, Kahathuduwa, Gampaha, Katana, Ja-ela were attacked.

It is the police that have to carry out initial investigations regarding these attacks. However, certain police officers have become stooges of the government. They act partially to the government to get service extensions, promotions and transfers.

When main media institutions report the incident as an attack on the street drama troupe, the police say it is a clash between two groups. We would state with responsibility that JVP politics cannot be stopped with Rajapaksa antics. When we struggled for democracy and justice in the country Rajapaksa and his likes were hiding under beds.

While government goons carry on attacks against the ordinary people the main topic in the country has become human rights debated in Geneva. Their main accusation against the government is that there is no justice or fair play in our country. The police and courts do not act impartially. When such accusations are brought in Geneva the government is breaking the heads of artistes.  As such, we ask the Commissioner of Elections to hold a special inquiry regarding police. They act partially. Our country has become a country of thugs. We ask all artistes to condemn the thug attack on performers of the street drama.

The government acted illegally to sabotage our public meeting at Kiribathgoda. The government continues its illegal acts throughout the island. As such, people should take a decision against this government. The dictatorial path could be turned around only by defeating the Rajapaksa lunacy that has been intoxicated by the power of thugs.

The JVP is carrying out a strong election project for the forthcoming election. The government has not been able to counter this strong programme. It is the thug politics of the government that betrays our country to Geneva. Hence, we call upon the masses to act intelligently.”

The Member of the Central Committee of the JVP and Leader of the group of candidates of the JVP from Kalutara District Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the performers of the street drama were attacked by thugs as soon as the performance at the bus stand ended. He said among the 12 to 15 government thugs who attacked the street drama performers were the person in charge of the bus stand and the time keeper. The audience of about 100 to 125 people got excited when the attack took place. Dr. Jayatissa said, “The thugs shouted that it was President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s area and no one would be allowed to engage in politics there. The thugs shouted that the leader of the JVP was brought down to hold a meeting on the 10th but no one would be allowed to do politics hereafter without permission from the government. They also assaulted two of our candidates. The thugs knew they were candidates when they attacked them. Thugs used iron rods, wooden poles and helmets to attack the performers.

When we went to Panadura police station to make the complaint the police acted in a very partial manner. Panadura HQI Mahesh Perera acted as if he was an officer of Rajapaksa regime. When the injured went to the police station to make the complaint they were kept waiting for more than 2 ½ hours. The complaint of the thugs was written first. When our complaint was written it was past 4.30. The injured who were admitted to hospital were threatened. We vehemently condemn the conduct of Panadura Police. The HQI has been appointed to this place by a project minister at Kalutara. The manner Panadura Police conducts itself during the election is deplorable.  Five members of our street drama troupe were arrested while only two members of the thugs who attacked the troupe were arrested.

The government deploys the police to carry out its illegal election campaign. The meeting held by the JVP on the 10th was obstructed. The government could not bear up the response the street drama troupe received from the masses. There is a clique of extorters at Panadura bus stand. They take ransom from buses and business establishments. They are the ones who spread violence. These thugs are sustained by government politicians and the police.  Hence, we ask the masses of this country to act against the violence generated by the government through its goons.

The Member of the National Committee of the Society for Socialist Art of the Socialist Youth Union Premaratna Tennekone was also present.
