India receives US resolution text

2014 Mar 08

India had today officially received the text of the US draft resolution on Sri Lanka which has been circulated among members at the UN Human Rights Council, Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said.

He told reporters at a media briefing in New Delhi that Indian officials are now examining the matter and will take into account all aspects of the matter before they take a view on it.

“But as you are aware, this is an evolving situation and there are continuing discussions going on in Geneva and we will take it from there,” he added.

The Indian Government had said recently it was awaiting the final text of the resolution on Sri Lanka to decide its stand if a vote is taken.

Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh had told a group of visiting Sri Lankan journalists in New Delhi that the Indian Government had not taken a decision on the resolution as the final text of the document has not yet been made available.

“In Geneva we are in touch with all parties looking at various aspects of the issue. It is something on our radar. We will see how it goes,” she said.

The Foreign Secretary also asserted that India has it’s own views on Sri Lanka and communicates that view to Sri Lanka, including on the Tamil issue.
