Certificate of absence discussed

2014 Mar 08

A certificate of absence is being considered instead of death certificates for those reported missing during the war.
Chairman of the Commission on Disappearances, Maxwell Parakrama said that the proposal has been discussed with the Commission.

He said that some family members of those missing are concerned when given death certificates as they feel their relatives maybe still alive.

“Emotionally these people feel let down when a death certificate is given. They feel their relatives may still be alive. A system followed overseas is to give an alternate to a death certificate. That is now being discussed here,” he said.

As a result he said the proposal for a “certificate of absence” has been discussed and is now likely to be implemented.

He said that the legal side of issuing a certificate of absence is being looked into before it is implemented.
