S.B says Lanka needs casinos

2014 Feb 24

S.B. Dissanayake says Sri Lanka needs casinos to develop the tourism industry.

Speaking at an event at the Peradeniya University in Kandy, the Minister said that betting on horse races is more harmful that casinos and yet no one objects to the many betting centers in Sri Lanka.

Dissanayake said that ordinary people in Sri Lanka with a low income often throw away their money at horse racing and suffer the consequences when they lose.

However he said the proposed casino in Sri Lanka will be confined to an area restricted for foreigners only and other casinos in the country will also be shifted there.

“The harm created by a race bookie will not be created by a casino,” he said.

Dissanayake said the proposed casino in Colombo will not only be a boost to the tourism industry but will also help the economy.

“The tourism industry in Sri Lanka is growing rapidly and at a time like this we must all support it grow instead of pushing it back,” he added.
