Monk complains to HRCSL against BBS

2014 Feb 17

Chief Prelate of the Mahiyangana Mahaweli Aramaya, Ven. Watareka Vijitha Thera, has complained to the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) that his life has been threatened by the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS).
According to the complaint, the Thera was being threatened by the BBS over the last six months, due to his action in establishing religious harmony in the area. The Thera said the BBS chased him and attacked him. "However, the HRCSL told me that they have no mandate to act against a civil organization."

BBS General Secretary, Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, when contacted, dismissed the allegation and said that Vijitha Thera was not in his right senses. "We do not know anything about this. If he has any complaints, he can lodge a complaint at the police station."

However, Vijitha Thera says the police were not taking any action due to the influence that the BBS wields over the police.
Human Rights Commissioner,

Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa, said the Commission had the mandate only to probe cases where there are human rights are violated by the Executive or the administration.

He said the Commission did not have the mandate to look into human rights cases regarding civil organizations, and that he would urge the police to look into the monk's grievance.
