India's DMK calls for UN referendum for a political solution in Sri Lanka

2014 Feb 17

India's Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party led by M. Karunanidhi has called for the Indian government to move a resolution in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) calling for a referendum for a political solution to the ethnic issue in Sri Lanka and to support the US-sponsored resolution.

At the DMK's 10th State conference on Sunday, the party has adopted a resolution urging the Indian government to insist on an UN-supervised referendum to devolve power to the Tamils in Sri Lanka, The Hindu reported.

It has also asked the central government to support an international inquiry into the alleged war crimes in the last phase of war between the Sri Lankan Army and the Tamil Tiger terrorist group LTTE.

"The Centre should not fall prey to the Sri Lankan government and should stand by the U.S. when the resolution against the Sri Lankan government for its human rights violations is moved in the UNHRC," the DMK has said in its resolution.

The Tamil Nadu party has also urged the Indian government to abrogate the agreement between India and Sri Lanka ceding the Katchatheevu islet to Sri Lanka.
