MR to decide on Geneva team

2014 Feb 08

President Mahida Rajapaksa will name the delegation that will participate in the forthcoming United Nations Human Rights Council sessions in March, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga told State media today.

Despite speculation by diplomats and legal luminaries that Sri Lanka will oppose or petition the legality of the UN Secretary General’s Panel of Experts’ Report, based on which the US has moved two resolutions against the country in 2012 and 2013 and are planning to sponsor another for the third successive year at the UNHRC, Sri Lanka will take a different course of action on the matter, according to Weeratunga.

Asked if there was any chance that Sri Lanka will challenge the legality of the UN Secretary General’s Panel of Experts’ Report or the US-sponsored resolutions against Sri Lanka, Weeratunga said: “I do not think so. It is very unlikely.”

Asked about the possibility of him being included in the Sri Lank’s delegation for UNHRC sessions in Geneva as the Head of the committee looking at the implementation of the National Action Plan on the Implementation of the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Report, he said, ” I have already made the international community aware about the progress Sri Lanka has made in terms of the LLRC implementation.”

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is yet to decide on the delegation to the UNHRC and who should lead the delegation.
