2014 Feb 05

The military says the university student who died yesterday while undergoing leadership training, had been ill.

The university entrant who was undergoing the “Leadership and Personality Development” joint training programme at Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) training school of the Army at Gannoruwa, passed away yesterday while receiving medical treatment at Peradeniya Teaching Hospital after a surgery for a prolonged illness.

Lahiru Sandaruwan Rathnayake of Kudawewa, Ambagaswewa, Nochchiyagama, was earlier diagnosed to be suffering from diaphragm-related illness, according to medical reports, and had been under treatment before he joined the Army-University Grant Commission Joint Training Programme with 269 others.

He was admitted to the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital on January 26 and subjected to an urgent laparatomy surgery on Tuesday but succumbed to his illness yesterday.

The post-mortem, conducted by Dr D.P. P Senasinghe, Consultant Judicial Medical Officer at Kandy General Hospital during the inquest into his death by the Kandy Magistrate, confirmed the death was due to an “Ischaemic Brain Damage, following Cardio Vascular Compression in Congenital Diaphragam Hernia”.
