A resolution was passed unanimously at the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) yesterday, to build a monument to remember those who died during the final stages of the war in Mullivaikkal, Mullaitivu.
The resolution was proposed by NPC Councillor representing Mullaitivu, T. Raviharan.
Speaking to Ceylon Today, Raviharan said thousands of people died in the Vanni during the final stages of the war, but there is no monument to remember them by.
"A monument has not been built to pay respect to the civilians in the Mullaitivu District. Therefore, I decided to bring in a resolution to build a monument remembering all the civilians, who died during the final stages of the war," he said.
The said resolution was seconded and supported by NPC Deputy Chairman, Anthony Jeyanathan.
Meanwhile, another resolution was passed to upgrade the Puthukudiyiruppu Divisional Hospital to a Base Hospital, which was also proposed by Raviharan.
