Probe on missing in Jaffna

2014 Jan 29

The Presidential Commission investigating allegations of disappearances during the war will conduct hearings in Jaffna next month, a Commission spokesman said.

The decision was taken after the Commission members met last evening and discussed its next course of action.

The Commission has already submitted details of those reported missing in Kilinochchi to the Attorney General’s (AG) Department

Secretary to the Commission H.W. Gunadasa had said earlier that following initial investigations conducted in Kilinochchi, the reports on 162 cases have been handed over to the Attorney General’s Department.

He said that if there are any cases involving missing persons which need further investigations, reports relating to those people will be further examined.

The Commission conducted public hearings over a four day period in Kilinochchi last week and among those who appeared was Ananthi Sasitharan, the wife of former Trincomalee district political head S. Elilan.

“Over the four day period 440 people came to lodge complaints to the Commission. But we did not have time to look into all of them so we hope to have further hearings again in the Kilinochchi area. But overall we feel we conduct our work successfully within the four days with the assistance of the public,” he added.
