US accused of sponsoring genocide

2014 Jan 23

Sri Lankan Government Minister and leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF) Wimal Weerawansa, today accused the Unites States of sponsoring genocide in the North of Sri Lanka.
Speaking at a National Freedom Front District convention today, Weerawansa said that the US Embassy in Colombo had put forward conditions to the Government in order to avoid pushing for a resolution against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council in March.

The Minister said that the conditions, if agreed upon, creates the environment for genocide to take place in the North by removing all Sinhalese people living in the area.

“Genocide took place in the North. In 1983 Black July took place in the South but Tamils are still living here. There are more Tamils here now than there were even during Black July. But in the North the Tigers evicted so many people and they have no place to go back to now,” the Minister said.

He said that the United States is accepting genocide carried out by the LTTE by discouraging Sinhalese and Muslims from being resettled in the North.

The Minister claimed that by alleging the Government and the army committed war crimes, the United States is attempting to create a communal conflict in Sri Lanka. (Colombo Gazette)
