Sampath arrested in Khuram case

2014 Jan 23

sampath vidanapathiranaFormer Chairman of the Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha, Sampath Vidanapathirana was arrested last night by the CID in relation to the case on the murder of British tourist Khuram Shaikh, police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.

The police spokesman said that Vidanapathirana was found hiding in a house in Kotte when he was arrested.

On January 9th the Colombo High Court had issued an arrest warrant on the main suspect in the murder case, a ruling UPFA member, for failing to appear in Court.

Vidanapathiranage was ordered to appear in Court on January 9 ahead of the trial which is set to begin in March.

However the High Court issued the arrest warrant after Vidanapathiranage failed to appear in Court.

Sampath Vidanapathirana was ordered to be remanded after he was produced before the Colombo High Court today.

Shaikh was murdered while he was on holiday in Tangalle in December 2011 while his Russian girlfriend, Victoria Aleksandrovna was raped.

The trial in the case will be heard from March 26. The Colombo High Court had in November read the indictments filed by the Attorney General on the suspects, including the former Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman, over the murder.

The suspects however pleaded innocent over the murder. (Colombo Gazette)
