Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Sampath Chandrapushpa Vidanapathirana, the suspect in the murder of British tourist Khuram Shaikh and rape of his Russian girlfriend at a Tangalle holiday resort on Christmas eve 2011, is still absconding.

The main suspect has been in hiding for nearly a week though the Colombo High Court on January 9 issued an arrest warrant for failing to appear at the trail on that day. The case will be heard on January 22.

Inspector General of Police, N. K. Illangakoon, when asked why the

police had failed to apprehend the suspect even after an order was issued by the Colombo High Court, said the police were looking for him and no sooner his hide-out was traced, he would be arrested.

IGP Illangakoon declined to divulge the number of police teams deployed to arrest him.

Asked whether the police had searched the hospital where the suspect’s counsel said he was being treated at, the IGP said that the police searched every private hospital in Tangalle but he had not been in any of them.

IGP said that no one had named the hospital were he was said to have been warded. He stressed that the suspect would be arrested.
