2014 Jan 07

Sri Lanka is facing a challenging global arena in its efforts to advance local interests, the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations noted.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UN in New York, Major General Shavendra Silva told his staff at the UN to strive to work for the benefit of the country and its people.

He said this at a function organised by the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations for the ceremonial commencement of work for the year 2014.

Major General Silva, along with the staff members followed the traditional guidelines by hoisting the national flag and singing the national anthem. A two minute silence was observed to commemorate the fallen war heroes, followed by the recital of the oath of Public Servants.

Later Major General Silva, conveyed the Permanent Representative, Dr. Palitha Kohona’s message to the staff in which he extended his warm wishes for the New Year and appreciated the “efforts to advance the interests of Sri Lanka in a challenging global arena”.

Addressing the gathering, Major General Silva affirmed that the unity and cooperation amongst fellow employees was and will always be the deciding factor in bettering not only the work environment but the country as a whole.

The ceremonies concluded with the senior diplomatic staff lighting the traditional oil lamp and the entire staff partaking in a customary breakfast table. (Colombo Gazette)
