Over 150,000 National Identity Card (NIC) numbers have been duplicated resulting in the NIC holders being unable to even apply for bank loans.

The NIC numbers have been duplicated owing to some errors made by the Department of Registration of Persons, sources said. The Department of Registration of Persons, when contacted by The Sunday Leader, said it will investigate such claims.

“If such errors are being made by the Registration of Persons Department we would take the whole responsibility and immediate measures to rectify the errors,” R M S Sarath Kumara, the Commissioner General of the Registration of Persons Department told The Sunday Leader.

He added that the mistakes often occur due to the manual system in the department and they would take necessary steps to computerize the system in the near future to avoid such mistakes. “We would also advise our legal department to take actions to rectify these errors. We will also carry out a proper investigation into the matter and carry out discussions with the Credit Information Bureau (CRIB) to resolve the problem,” he said.
