A US based hip hop duo have created controversy by going on stage in Sydney, Australia, waving the LTTE flag and speaking in support of the rebels.

Dead Prez, stylized as dead prez, is a hip hop duo known for their confrontational style, combined with socialist lyrics focused on both militant social justice and Pan-Africanism.

The duo, during a New Year concert, started speaking about the LTTE while one performer had the LTTE flag wrapped around him.

One performer then asked the crowd to cheer for the LTTE and Sri Lanka and he then expressed solidarity with the LTTE.

He then went on to speak about the thousands killed during the final stages of the war in 2009 and said that the fight for liberation will continue despite the defeat of the LTTE.

In the year 2000 Dead Prez’s debut album ‘Let’s Get Free’ dished out their popular single to date “Hip Hop”. The album was well received by critics, and included intense political diatribes featuring prominent black activist Omali Yeshitela, as well as “Animal in Man” – a retelling of George Orwell’s Animal Farm.

The instrumental version of their song “Hip Hop” was used as Dave Chappelle’s entrance music for his show on Comedy Central, and can be heard on every episode. The popular video game SKATE also features the song “Hip Hop” in their sound track.
