Manmohan intervenes on issue

A meeting between fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka to find a permanent solution to the continuing attack on Tamil fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy will be held by third week of January next year.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has conveyed this message to DMK Parliamentary Party leader T.R. Baalu who led a delegation of fishermen to Delhi, The Hindu newspaper reported.

“The Prime Minister told me that he had asked External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid to organise a meeting by third week of January, possibly on January 20,” Baalu said in a statement

Dr. Singh had said that both Mr. Khurshid and National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon were in touch with the Sri Lankan government and all Tamil fishermen men would be released soon.

A total of 227 Tamil fishermen have been lodged in various prisons in Sri Lankan and 77 boats are under the custody of Sri Lankan Navy. Similarly, 213 Sri Lankan fishermen are in jails in India.
