HRCSL stops irrigation interview

2013 Dec 27

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has issued a directive to stop the interview process at the Irrigation Department after the letters calling applicants for interviews was issued only in the Sinhala language.

HRCSL said the Irrigation Department had issued letters calling applicants for interviews for the posts of Lab Assistants only in the Sinhala Language.

The Commission said that the move had placed Tamil applicants in difficulty and was also a violation of the language rights guaranteed by the Constitution of Sri Lanka.

To rectify this situation the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka immediately issued 3 directives to the Director General of Irrigation Department including to stop the current interviews.

HRCSL had also directed the department to to re-issue letters calling for interviews in Tamil to the respective Tamil candidates and to hold fresh interviews. (Colombo Gazette)
