Sri Lanka to remember Tsunami

A two minute silence to be observed from 9.25 am to 9.27 am tomorrow will be part of the National tsunami remembrance events to be held in Sri Lanka.

The Disaster Management Center said that the National Safety Day event, which coincides with the tsunami disaster anniversary, will be held in Kalutara tomorrow.

Prime Minister D.M Jayaratne will be the chief guest at the Kalutara event, DMC spokesman Sarath Lal Kumara told the Colombo Gazette.

Over 35,000 people were killed in Sri Lanka the 2004 December 26 tsunami and thousands of others were displaced and affected.

The Indian Ocean tsunami killed over 230,000 people in fourteen countries, and inundated coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters (98 ft) high.

It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Indonesia was the hardest-hit country, followed by Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. (Colombo Gazette)
