HRC yet to receive nod for amendments to obsolete HR Act

2013 Dec 24

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) of Sri Lanka is yet to receive approval for the proposed amendments to the Human Rights Act of 1996 that will further strengthen the Commission.

Head of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa has said that the existing Act is obsolete and is in need of amendments.

The proposed amendments were handed over to the President and Justice Minister two weeks ago.

Dr. Mahanamahewa has observed that there are 58 human rights commissions in the Asia Pacific Region and Sri Lanka is a member State of the Asia Pacific Human Rights Forum and the quality of Sri Lanka's human rights should therefore commensurate with these standards.
